Social Awareness Campaign: End The Backlog

For this social awareness campaign, I chose to address the unprecedented number of untested rape kits across the U.S. Because there is no standardized system for tracking and handling rape kits, it is unknown exactly how large the backlog is but is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands. In this poster campaign, I wanted to capture the unseen burden carried by rape victims with untested kits. In poster on the left I depicted how rape kits are an extension of a victims body and when evidence is mistreated it can feel violating. The poster on the right illustrates how often victims feel tethered to their kit and when it sits on a shelf for years, it is almost like a prison sentence.

Illustrations were treated with a rugged texture that speaks to the both the physical and emotional battering victims experience while being attacked and during their navigating through the justice system. A geometric gradient is applied to the human form to depict the fractured feelings a victim can experience. The high contrast and complementary color palette grabs attention, while the orange is indicative of prison uniforms and the blue evokes a somber feeling.
